This course offers an opportunity to examine what is encompassed in spirituality as defined by "the human striving for a sense of mean ing, purpose, values and fulfillment - distinguished from religion, which is viewed as the institutional context of spiritual beliefs, a social process having to do with shared rituals, beliefs and prac tice" (Russel, 1995). This course also will examine the major religions of the world as we seek to understand the varieties of spirituality that frame client's lives. This course will examine values, ethics, diversity and social justice and will do this by utilizing a systematic mode of inquiry. This will be accomplished by reading assignments in refereed journals and other suitable literature, as well as an assignment in which this material is applied to social work assessment and intervention.
