Sexuality is an integral component of every individual and thus, should be considered in assessment and intervention. This elective course in the Human Behavior and Social Environment Content Area is designed to provide social work students with an overview of the theoretical perspectives on the development process of human sexuali ty. The process of sexual development results from a complex inter play of human systems, social forces, and social policies, which impact upon individuals and groups. It is impossible to discuss every force that interacts in this complex scheme, thus the course will cover the biological, psychological, and sociological aspects of sexual development across the life span framed in a strengths perspective. The main focus will be upon specific contemporary issues and their implications for social work practice, policy, and research. Particular attention will be given to the discussion of the wide range of beliefs and behaviors related to sexuality. Issues of discrimination and oppression will be addressed as they apply to various groups (e.g. gays, lesbians, bisexuals, women, elderly, disabled, etc). Social work and related literature will be examined to assess the ways in which we develop knowledge of human sexuality, especially the limitations of research regarding sexual issues. Students will be encouraged to examine their own value systems related to sexuality and how their belief system may affect their practice stances. Ethical dilemmas related to human sexuality will be considered throughout the course.
