CJ 433 THE AMERICAN PRISON

3.0 Undergraduate credits

This course focuses upon the role of the prison in corrections. It reviews the historical development of the prison, major features of inmate cultures(s), the structure of staff/prisoner relationships, and its "success" as a site of reform and resocialization. Special topics may include cross-cultural comparisons, prison violence (including riots), prisoner health care (including AIDS, substance abuse, pregnancy, etc.), and the structure of careers in corrections.
