This course will investigate the methods and techniques of several types of non-fiction: autobiography, personal and narrative essay, literary journalism, political humor, and the non-fiction novel. The ongoing task will be to define just what non-fiction is--and isn't--and why. Students will read a variety of works from various racial, ethnic and gender perspectives. Authors will be Joan Didion, Richard Rodriguez, Maxine Hong Kingston, and Jamaica Kincaid, among others. Requirements include two exams, two essays, unannounced quizzes, and a lot of class participation.
