Examines romanticism in nineteenth century American literature as part of the emotional/rational duality that has persisted in human nature at all times and places; as the descendant of the European romanticism that revolutionized thought and action on the Continent and in England; and as the counterpart of contemporary international struggles in behalf of the global environment, national self-determination and the integrity of the individual.
