ENGL 356 RURAL LITERATURE

3.0 Undergraduate credits

Through reading major works in several genres, students will investigate the massive transformations in rural America during the last century and a half. The course studies how rural-based texts respond to issues of race, class, gender and the environment—issuses central to any definition of America. Authors include Willa Cather, John Steinbeck, Zora Neale Hurston, Luis Valdez and Jane Smiley, among others.
